technochocolate: imessengers be warned

(Via Ben Brooks Review)

Ben Brooks:

The second point he brings up on privacy though is something that I have never thought of, and is in the same vein of why I hate people that send mass emails with the recipients all in the “to” field instead of BCC’d.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ben on this. I have lost count of how many times I’ve warned friends and business contacts that exposing email addresses in the “To” or “CC” fields is both annoying and a potential security breach. But these people seem unable to understand. Perhaps they are unable to find the BCC (blind carbon copy) field, but they never ask for help.

In the main, people who send witticisms and jokes, or pleas for charity to all their friends are the worst offenders. Invariably their friends’ list includes a number of hapless individuals who are the most lax with their security. If their email accounts get compromised, all the To and CC addresses in emails are in the hands of spammers within minutes.

As Ben says, I end up hating these irresponsible people, friends or not.
