SSD failures: Horror story as eight out of eight drives bite the dust
Solid-state drives are fast and highly desirable, despite their premium pricing. But my confidence and enthusiasm took a knock in March when the 256GB drive in my May 2010 13in MacBook Pro failed in strange circumstances. Now I read tales of disaster from Jeff Atwood of Coding Horror. He's a great enthusiast of SSDs for their speed, but he's had more than his fair share of failures. He also recounts the tale of another SSD-fan, Portman Wills, who bought eight SSDs over the past two years and all of them failed, mostly catastrophically. All this is news to me. Up to my recent experience—when I initially blamed everything but the disk—I had entertained warm thoughts of speed coupled with supreme reliability. Now I'm no longer so sure.
