London Riots: RIM offers to help 'in any way we can'
Following my story on the London riots earlier today, RIM have now offered full assistance to the police after it became clear that BBM, Blackberry Messaging service, was being used to orchestrate the continuing violence in several areas of the capital:
“As in all markets around the world where BlackBerry is available, we co-operate with local telecommunications operators, law enforcement and regulatory officials,” said RIM’s managing director, Patrick Spence. “Similar to other technology providers in the UK we comply with the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and co-operate fully with the Home Office and UK police forces.”
Ofcom, the UK’s telecommunicatons watchdog, recently published research to show that BlackBerry is now the most popular smartphone brand among teenagers with a 37-percent market share compared with Apple’s 17 per cent.
