Photojournalism: Fatal accident in London
It's not often I am on the spot at the right moment with my camera, but this was an exception. This scene is just round the corner from one of London's leading Leica dealers, R.G.Lewis and I was on my way to a photographic club shoot at the nearby British Museum.
Passers by thought this car wreck in London's Holborn was the result of a bomb. But it was in reality a million-to-one accident which has made national news because of the dreadful circumstances. The Skoda car was approaching the traffic lights at Southampton Row just after eleven last night when the entire pediment of a tall building, next door to McDonald's, fell off into the roadway. The storm was at its height and the unsupported pediment just broke free. Sadly, one of the car's occupants was killed, one seriously injured and two escaped without serious injury. Only today after 3 pm was it safe enough for workmen to start clearing up.
