Fuji X-Pro2 and 18-135mm watch Cambridge win the 2016 Boat Race
Yesterday when I scoured the banks of the Thames looking for life, I promised a glimpse of the 2016 Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in action. A few minutes ago I caught a few shots of the excitement on the river as Cambridge powered ahead to win, for the first time since 2012. What always amazes me about this spectacle is how insignificant the team boats are in comparison with the camp followers, serried ranks of classic river launches, modern sightseeing boats and the emergency services.
It was a choppy race, thanks to the blustery winds, and the Thames was giving of its worst. Earlier in the day it defeated the Cambridge women's team when their boat shipped so much water that they barely made it to the finish. The Oxford women triumphed in that race so it was down to the men of Cambridge to make amends.
Again this afternoon I used the Fuji X-Pro2 but swapped the 56mm f/1.2 Fujinon for the excellent do-all zoom, the 18-135 which should be great for an event such as this. With its 27-206mm reach it acquitted itself well although, to get more dramatic closeups an even longer lens would have been useful.
