Leica Q: New ventilated retro hood added to Overgaard collection
Danish photographer and writer Thorsten von Overgaard has added to his range of ventilated hoods with a new design for the Leica Q. The Q does come as standard with a rather angular unventilated hood, somewhat reminiscent of Fuji’s shades. You either like it or loathe it. Thorsten’s new creation is a bit of a big beast and it adds a new dimension to the popular full-frame 28mm camera. It is large, brash and retro all in one. Since it fits on the outside thread it leaves the inside 49mm filter thread free.
Thorsten designed this for his own Q and then found people asking about it. So he ordered some more and they are now on sale through his web site at a cost of $179.
The Q shade follows on from the earlier Overgaard-designed hood for the Leica 35mm Summilux-M ASPH f/1.4 FLE. That has proved to be very popular and is still available in black (at $149) or silver (at $159). Full details here. Again, this hood fits on the outer thread and doesn’t interfere with the 46mm filter thread.
I like both these hoods and I could certainly be tempted.
