Santa Claus and the Leica reindeer edition M262
I've been saving this one for Christmas day. Has anyone been lucky enough to find the reindeer edition M262 in their bulging stocking this morning? If so, it has definitely been worth a mince pie and a small glass of Croft's left on the hearth.
But you well know my views on special editions. Just like Henry VIII with his clipped coins, Leica do a pretty good job of devaluing the brand by issuing special editions on any possible pretext. This year we've had some corkers, including the Stickkky Keyboard edition our very own Wigan Pier edition in homage to George Orwell.
Yet this cheery chappie with the red titfer is something we can excuse. The accompanying 50mm Apo-Summicron lens, also in a red anodised finish, is an objet that will be collectable in its own right and will undoubtedly rise in value. The camera body is now selling in the USA for $6,995. The matching lens is a further $8,950. Since the edition is limited to 100 pieces, you will indeed be very lucky if Santa favoured you today. My stocking was empty, as usual. All I got was a black, non-festive CL and I had to buy that myself.
