Voigtländer 50mm f/1.2 Nokton Aspherical available in August

Chunky, ergonomically excellent, super fast and weighing only 347g — a good companion for any Leica M, film or digital

Voigtländer’s expansion of its M-mount lenses continues. The new 50mm f/1.2 Nokton is another superb optic at an astonishingly attractive price. Back in April, we reviewed the 40mm f/1.2 Nokton which we declared to be the meat in the sandwich between the established 35mm and 50mm standard focal lengths.

Now Voigtländer has introduced the 50mm version, the Nokton f/1.2 Aspherical VM. It offers a faster prime view than the established f/1.4 lenses such as the Leica Summilux, yet approaches the legendary f/0.95 maximum aperture of the Leica Noctilux and one-tenth of the price. Only you can judge whether it is 10% or 90% as good….

This is a new design using the latest technology. The aperture range is from f/1.2-22 with one-third stops and the lens comprises eight elements in six groups. Minimum focal distance is 70cm, constrained by the limits of the rangefinder mechanism, but on mirrorless cameras, it can focus down to 41.7cm in some circumstances.

Sadly, the hood comes at extra cost, in common with other VM lenses in the same family. E-mount versions, however, have a hood included

The company claims that the two aspherical elements provide reliable optical performance at maximum aperture, as well as a very gentle transition to out-of-focus bokeh thanks to the 12-blade diaphragm. The lens is designed for use with both digital and film cameras and is equipped with a rangefinder coupling cam.

One of the most impressive aspects of both the new 50mm and the established 40mm Nokton is the compact size and excellent ergonomics, enhanced by the retro scalloped focus ring. The 40mm is a delightful lens to use and I have no doubt that the 50mm will be equally impressive. This fast lens is chunky and very attractive yet weighs only 347g.

The new lens will be available in Voigtländer dealers, including Red Dot Cameras, from August at a recommended price of £829, including VAT.
