  • Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH.

  • Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH.

    14 January 2016

Leica Camera has introduced next-generation models of three of its classic M lenses:
the Leica M Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH., Leica Summicron-M 28 mm f/2 ASPH. and Leica Elmarit-M 28 mm f/2.8 ASPH., each delivering enhanced image performance and quality, thanks to their new optical design.

Additional improvements to the lenses include a more robust construction, now featuring a full metal rectangular lens hood with thread mount, and a threaded protection ring for the front of the lens when the hood is not attached. The lens cap is now also made of metal.

As with all Leica products, this classic trio of reportage lenses offers both optical and technical excellence. Made in Germany, the combination of state-of-the-art technology, the highest quality materials and meticulous manual construction ensures consistent quality, resulting in reliable products with outstanding durability.

The new generation Summicron-M 28 mm f/2 ASPH. and Elmarit-M 28 mm f/2.8 ASPH. lenses are scheduled to be available from the end of January. The Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH. is scheduled to be available from February in black and, for the first time, also in a silver anodised finish.

The impressive Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH. fast, classic prime lens delivers superior image performance and a unique bokeh. Despite its high speed and exceptional image quality, its dimensions are astoundingly compact. Furthermore, with its eleven blade iris, this new generation lens creates a circular aperture, lending out of focus areas an extremely smooth look and feel. Images are pin-sharp with rich contrast, and almost completely free from distortion with superb bokeh at all apertures and distances – and even when shooting wide open.

High performance and speed are also distinct characteristics of the Summicron-M 28 mm f/2 ASPH. wide-angle lens. Its outstanding speed makes it particularly versatile and produces brilliant

imaging results, even in difficult lighting conditions. At its maximum aperture, the Summicron-M 28 mm f/2 ASPH. delivers rich contrast, differentiated reproduction of even the finest structures, a soft and smooth bokeh, and extremely high resolution. Improvements within the optical design in this new generation lens have made it possible to achieve superior image performance across the entire image field. The significant reduction of image field curvature guarantees better resolution of details from corner to corner within every picture.

The Elmarit-M 28 mm f/2.8 ASPH. is the most compact lens in the entire portfolio of Leica M lenses. Thanks to its small size and light weight, this lens is a particular favourite with street and reportage photographers. Compared to the previous model, this new generation lens offers significantly reduced image field curvature, which brings considerably improved image performance with high resolution and brilliant resolution of details. The Elmarit-M 28 mm f/2.8 ASPH. is practically distortion-free from infinity to its closest focusing distance of 0.7 metres, and provides an exceptionally clear view through the Leica M viewfinder.

Introducing the FUJIFILM X70:

The smallest and lightest X-Series model with an APS-C sized sensor. Featuring a new FUJINON 18.5mm*1 F2.8 lens for every scene from landscapes to snapshots.

Embargo: 15th January 2016

4:30 GMT

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) is proud to announce the launch of the FUJIFILM X70, a premium compact digital camera featuring a new FUJINON 18.5mm*1F2.8 lens suitable for a range of applications from landscapes to snapshots. The camera, which will be available in February 2016, features an APS-C sized X-Trans CMOS II sensor and EXR Processor II image processing engine.

The X70 bears all the hallmarks of the range combining a simple manual operation with superior image quality and versatile picture-taking functions. The X70 is the first X-Series model to offer a touchscreen display that rotates 180 degrees enabling users to shoot from up high, down low and capture selfies.

Key features of the X70

1. New FUJINON 18.5mm F2.8 lens for a wide range of shooting conditions from landscapes to snapshots!

By using the optical design from the X100T, it has been possible to develop a compact, high quality wide-angle lens in a smaller, thinner body. The single focal length lens distributes light evenly across the frame to produce a high-resolution image from the centre to the edges.

2. High-quality finish and easy operation encourage creativity

Weighing approximately 340g*2, the X70 is the lightest X-Series camera with an APS-C sized sensor. The top-plate features milled aluminium exposure compensation and shutter speed dials, making it easy to quickly access key features, while the aperture and focusing rings are also made from milled aluminium to help keep weight down. Apertures can be changed in 1/3 or 1 stop increments, plus the focusing ring doubles up as a control ring for quick access to a range of functions.

The X70 is also equipped with an Auto Mode Switch lever for selecting the fully automatic Advanced SR Auto mode. Once selected, the camera automatically chooses the optimum settings for great results on any scene.

3. Compact body with an APS-C sized X-Trans CMOS II*3 sensor and EXR Processor II image processing engine

Key technologies that deliver the high quality images unique to X-Series models have been compressed into a pocket-sized body. This includes the stunning colour reproduction technology, developed as a result of more than 80 years of photographic film research, and the unique Lens Modulation Optimiser (LMO) image processing technology that corrects optical defects such as diffraction to achieve edge-to-edge sharpness and a realistic three-dimensional effect.

On-sensor phase detection AF focuses in an ultra-fast 0.1 sec*4 and, thanks to the high-speed EXR Processor II image processor, the camera starts up in just 0.5sec*5, has a shutter time lag of 0.01sec and shooting interval of 0.5sec*6.

4. The first 180-degree tilting touchscreen LCD in an X-Series camera

The X70 features a touchscreen LCD; a first for the X-Series. Turning on the Touch Panel Settings enables Touch Shot and Focus Area Selection when shooting. During playback, intuitive smartphone-style operations including swipe, drag, pinch in/out, and double-tap scaling can be performed. By combining the Touch Shot function with the 180-degree tilt LCD, you can get even more creative. Place the camera on the ground and use Touch Shot for a child’s or pet’s eye view. The same function also makes it easier to shoot selfies.

5. Dedicated accessories to expand the world of the X70

Four dedicated optional accessories have been developed to make the X70 more versatile. The four include the BLC-X70 half leather case for protection and to provide an extra grip, the LH-X70 lens hood to cut down flare and ghosting, the VF-X21 optical viewfinder for those who prefer to frame images through a finder and the WCL-X70 wide conversion lens giving a 21mm view (35mm equivalent).

 Main features of the X70

(1) Function-driven FUJINON 18.5mm F2.8 lens

・ Comprising seven elements in five groups, including two high-performance aspherical elements, the lens delivers highly detailed images with minimal aberrations, excellent sharpness and beautiful colour reproduction. FUJINON's unique HT-EBC coating has also been used to control flare and ghosting.

・ Using a non-collapsible lens design and minimal lens length keeps size down and eliminates telescoping of the lens when powered up. The X70 is ready to start shooting the moment the user switches it on.

・ The 9-blade aperture diaphragm combined with the large F2.8 aperture and high-quality optics lets users take photos with beautiful bokeh effects.

・ A close focusing distance of approx. 10cm*7 lets users enjoy all the benefits of macro photography.

*7 Distance from the front of the lens surface to the subject.

(2) Easy operation and a premium finish

・ By using smooth aluminium for the body and shutter speed and exposure compensation dials on the top-plate, the X70 has a premium look and feel without being too heavy.

・    The aperture can be adjusted by 1/3 stop increments using the aperture ring, while up to ±3 stops of exposure compensation is available on the top-plate dial.

・    It is also equipped with an Auto Mode Switch lever for selecting the fully-automatic Advanced SR Auto mode. In this mode, the camera automatically chooses the optimum settings for a given scene to make shooting effortless.

・ The X70 is equipped with eight Fn buttons, each one of which is customisable. Further user customisation is offered via the Q Button on the back of the camera: all 16 functions can be chosen according to the user's preference.

・    The camera is designed to allow the photographer to keep their left hand on the lens’s aperture ring with their right hand operating the shutter speed and exposure compensation dials on the top-plate. This allows instant changing of settings to meet the photographer’s needs.

・  The lens barrel features a control ring in addition to the aperture ring. Depending on the shooting mode, various functions are automatically assigned to the control ring making them quicker to access and change. Functions such as ISO sensitivity, Film Simulation, white balance, continuous shooting and the Digital Tele-converter can be assigned by pushing the control ring setting button on the left side of the body.

・ The X70 features a bright, highly detailed 3.0-inch monitor with 1.04 million dots that has a wide viewing angle and can be tilted 180°. The tilting screen is useful for shooting from a low-angle for children and pets, from a high-angle above large crowds or obstacles, or for capturing self-portraits.

 (3) Perfect your photos with Film Simulation modes and other creative features

・ The X70's 16.3-megapixel X-Trans CMOS II sensor controls moiré and false colours with the X-Trans colour filter, with its random arrangement of RGB pixels negating the need for a low-pass filter. Combined with the EXR Processor II processing engine, the camera delivers images with impressive levels of sharpness and low noise.

・ Fujifilm’s unique colour reproduction technology, created through years of researching photographic films, helps reproduce warm skin tones, bright blue skies and rich greens.

・ A high ISO setting of 51,200*8 has been made possible by optimising noise reduction processing. Noise is reduced even at these ultra-high sensitivities, reproducing deep blacks.

・ Diffraction*9 is corrected by the unique Lens Modulation Optimiser which delivers superb detail even when the aperture is set to F16.

・ The X70 features CLASSIC CHROME Film Simulation mode, which delivers muted tones and deep colours. Users can choose from ten other modes that simulate the effects of traditional Fujifilm films. These include colour reversal film effects (Velvia/PROVIA/ASTIA), professional colour negative film (PRO Neg.Std / PRO Neg.Hi), monochrome filters (MONOCHROME, Ye filter, R filter and G filter) and SEPIA.

・ Advanced Filter functions are also available on the X70. Users can choose from eight different artistic effects:

Pop Colour - Emphasises contrast and colour saturation.

Toy Camera - Creates shaded borders as if you were taking a photo on a toy camera.

Miniature - Adds top and bottom blur for a diorama or miniature effect.

Dynamic Tone - Creates a fantasy effect by boosting tones.

Partial Colour - Retains one selected original colour and changes the rest of the photo black & white. Colours can be selected from red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.

High Key - Enhances brightness and reduces contrast to lighten tonal reproduction.

Low Key - Creates uniformly dark tones with few highlight areas.

Soft Focus - Creates a look that is soft throughout the whole image.

・ The Multiple Exposure function offers users the chance to combine two separate subjects into one photo, perfect for adding people into images.

・ The camera's aspect ratio can be selected from 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1 (square) to accommodate a wide range of photographic styles.

・ The camera also features an ADVANCED SR AUTO mode, which recognises faces and every scene type before automatically optimizing the focus, exposure, ISO and other settings.

Interval timer shooting for time lapse photography is available with intervals of one second to 24 hours for up to 999 frames.

・ The camera has a completely silent electronic shutter that is capable of exposures up to 1/32,000sec. . Photos with a shallow depth-of-field can now be shot with the aperture wide open. As there are no mechanically operated parts, candid shots of animals and sleeping babies can be captured easier.

・ Other features include a Digital Split Image for precise manual focusing, and Focus Peaking, which highlights the part of the scene that is in focus. This can be highlighted in white, red or blue, providing a focusing guide even when photographing a scene that's tricky to focus on.

*8 During expanded sensitivity.

*9 When a fine image that should be sharp is blurred when shooting by stopping down the aperture.

 (4) Intuitive operation with the touchscreen display

・ The X70’s touchscreen panel, the first in an X-Series model, enablescomfortable and intuitive use. Turning the Touch Panel Settings on allows the following operations during shooting and playback modes:

Shooting Modes

・Focus Area Selection: Move the focus point to the chosen position by tapping the LCD monitor.

・Touch Shot: Touch to focus on a specific point, then take the picture.

Playback Modes

・Swipe Movement : Swiping a finger across the screen scrolls through the images, one after another.

・Double-Tap Enlargement: Tapping the screen twice will enlarge the image, centering on the active focus point when the images was taken.

・Drag: Moving a finger across the screen when an image is enlarged will move it around the frame.

・Pinch out: Placing two fingers on the screen and widening the distance between them enlarges the image.

・Pinch in: While the image being displayed is enlarged, placing two fingers on the screen and narrowing the distance between them reduces the image size*10.

・ All the touchscreen functions are disabled when the Touch Panel Settings are turned off.

*10 Cannot be zoomed out further than the original image.

(5) Digital Tele-converter *11 with three settings

・ One body, three lenses. The X70’s fixed lens offers a 28mm angle of view (35mm equivalent) but, thanks to the first Digital Tele-converter in an X-Series camera, users can also select 35mm and 50mm options. Settings for the Digital Tele-converter can be changed within the menu, or on the control ring on the lens barrel, enabling users to quickly check the image on the LCD before shooting.

*11 The image quality may degrade when using the Digital Tele-converter function. Phase detection AF is only effective in the centre of the screen. Contrast AF is enabled for the rest of the screen.

(6) AF system with Zone and Wide/Tracking modes for effortless capture of moving subjects

・ The AF system offers the standard 49-point Single Point mode for high speed and precision focusing, as well as the new Zone and Wide/Tracking modes that use a larger 77-point area to capture moving subjects.

・ Zone mode allows users to select a 3x3, 5x3 or 5x5 zone out of the 77-point AF area. During AF-C*12, the camera continually tracks a subject, positioned at the centre of the zone. The centrally-positioned 3x3 and 5x3 zones deliver fastest focusing thanks to the on-sensor phase detection AF.

・ The Wide/Tracking mode is a combination of the Wide mode (during AF-S), in which the camera automatically identifies and tracks the area in focus across the 77-point AF area, and the predictive Tracking mode (during AF-C), which uses the entire 77-point area to continue tracking a subject. This feature enables continuous focusing on a subject that is moving up and down, left and right or towards and away from the camera.

・ The Single Point mode divides the focus area into smaller sections to accurately determine the distance to the subject for greater focusing precision. The working range of the on-sensor phase detection AF works at high speed even in low light conditions or on a low contrast subject.

・ The camera features Eye Detection AF, which automatically detects and focuses on human eyes. The function allows you to easily focus on the eyes even in difficult conditions – when shooting a portrait with a very wide aperture to obtain strong bokeh effects, for example.

・ The Auto Macro function automatically activates the Macro mode while maintaining AF speed, eliminating any need to press the Macro button to capture a close-up. This allows you to re-assign the Macro button to a different function.

・ A new optimised AF algorithm delivers a smoother and more natural AF action during video recording.

・ With the combination of the phase detection AF data and subject motion predictive AF, the camera is capable of continuous shooting with AF-C at up to approx. 8.0fps.

*12 AF system continuously focuses while pressing the shutter button halfway.

*13 When set to AF-C and CH, the focus area is fixed to the range of Central 3x3 ("Single Point" mode), or Central 5x3 ("Zone" / "Wide / Tracking” mode).

(7) Full HD video with the X-Trans CMOS II sensor

・ 60fps smooth Full HD movies can be shot with the X70. 50fps, 30fps, 25fps and 24fps frame rates are also available.

・ Film Simulation modes, including the latest CLASSIC CHROME, and detailed white balance setting is also possible.

・ Exposure can be set manually during movie shooting. Aperture, shutter speed*14 and ISO sensitivity can be changed enabling movies to be shot using an exposure of the user's preference.

・ High-speed, high-precision focusing is made possible by activating Intelligent Hybrid AF, which automatically switches between phase-detection AF or contrast AF according to the scene, even during movie shooting. Manual focus is also possible.

・ Six types of scene recognition functions can be used so that users can capture beautiful movies.

・ A high bit rate of 36Mbps enables high definition capture of delicate movements.

*14 Aperture and shutter speed can be changed during shooting. Only shutter speeds faster than the set frame rate can be set.

(8) Built in Wi-Fi for shooting from your smartphone or tablet devices*15

・ By downloading the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote app to your smartphone or tablet device, users can use the Remote Control function, which allows a wealth of control, even from a distance. This functionality is great for a wide variety of shots, including group photos, self-portraits and animals in their natural habitat.

(2) Real-Time Viewfinder

With a magnification of 0.62x and a display lag time of just 0.005sec, the X-E2S has a large and fast viewfinder. It offers a clear and high-definition live view thanks to the new 2.36million dot organic EL electronic viewfinder. The live view display can also be set to the Preview Pic. Effect option to reflect the shooting conditions or to offer a view close to the naked eye. The viewfinder’s eye sensor will also automatically orientate the information in the display when the camera is positioned vertically; a feature not possible with optical viewfinder models.

(3) The X-TransTM CMOS II Sensor and EXR Processor II engine combine to deliver outstanding image quality and high-speed performance

The camera features Fujifilm’s APS-C 16.3 megapixel X-Trans™ CMOS II sensor. Its unique, random colour filter array reduces moiré and false colours without using an optical low pass filter which compromises image quality. The elimination of the low pass filter provides a greater amount of light reaches the sensor. Combined with the EXR Processor II image processor, the sensor delivers outstanding resolution and low noise.

・The X-E2S has a maximum ISO setting of 51200*7 achieved by combining the processor’s noise reduction function with the technology for mounting circuit boards to reduce noise in high sensitivity images. Even at an ultra-high sensitivity, the X-E2S produces low noise and strong blacks, broadening its potential in low light conditions.

・The camera features the unique Lens Modulation Optimiser (LMO)*8 image processing technology to deliver the best possible image quality. Using optical performance and other characteristics of each lens, LMO corrects optical defects such as diffraction*9 to deliver edge-to-edge sharpness and a realistic three-dimensional effect.

・The unique on-sensor phase detection AF system focuses in an ultra-fast 0.06 sec*8 With the high-speed EXR Processor II image processor, the camera starts up in just 0.5sec*9 and it has a shutter time lag of 0.05sec and shooting interval of 0.5sec*10.

(4) New AF system with Zone and Wide/Tracking modes for easy capture of moving subjects

・The AF system offers the standard 49-point Single Point mode for fast, precise focusing and the new Zone and Wide/Tracking modes that use a larger 77-point area to capture moving subjects.

・Zone mode allows users to select a 3x3, 5x3 or 5x5 zone from the 77-point AF area. During AF-C focus, the camera continually tracks a subject, positioning in the centre of the selected zone. The centrally positioned 3x3 and 5x3 zones offer the fastest focusing thanks to the on-sensor phase detection AF.

・The Wide/Tracking mode is a combination of the Wide mode (during AF-S), in which the camera automatically identifies and tracks the area in focus across the 77-point AF area, and the predictive Tracking mode (during AF-C), which uses the entire 77-point area to continue tracking a subject. This feature enables continuous focusing on a subject that is moving up and down, left and right or towards and away from the camera.

・The Single Point mode divides the focus area into smaller sections to accurately determine the distance to the subject for greater focusing precision. The working range of the on-sensor phase detection AF has been improved from 2.5EV to 0.5EV so phase detection AF works at high speed even in low light conditions or on a low contrast subject.

・The camera features Eye Detection AF, which automatically detects and focuses on human eyes. The function allows you to easily focus on the eyes of the subject even in difficult conditions – when shooting a portrait with a very wide aperture to obtain strong bokeh effects, for example.

・The Auto Macro function automatically activates the Macro mode while maintaining AF speed without pressing the Macro button to capture a close-up. This allows you to re-assign the Macro button to a different function.

・An optimised algorithm delivers a smoother and more natural AF action during video recording.

・With the combination of the phase detection AF data and subject motion predictive AF, the camera is capable of continuous shooting with AF-C at up to approx. 7.0fps*10.

Posted on by Mike Evans

The FUJIFILM X-Pro2

Taking performance to new heights, the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 offers the world's only Hybrid Multi Viewfinder and features a brand new 24MP X-Trans III sensor

Embargo: 15th January 2016

4:30 GMT

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) is proud to announce the release of the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 premium interchangeable lens camera. The new model boasts a Hybrid Viewfinder capable of instantly switching between optical and electronic finders, plus an updated image sensor and processor, which dramatically improve image quality. By combining these features with the ultra-high image quality of FUJINON X-Mount lenses and the colour reproduction technology accumulated through more than 80 years as a photographic film manufacturer, the X-Pro2 delivers the best ever results from an X-series camera.

Electronic viewfinders (EVF) used by mirrorless cameras are said to be superior to optical viewfinders because settings including white balance and exposure can be checked instantly, and the displayed image can be enlarged to check focusing accuracy. However, in some cases, photographers prefer a more natural view. In particular, the optical rangefinder, which allows the user to view the subject in almost the same way as the naked eye, is extremely effective and often preferred by documentary, reportage and street photographers. The X-Pro2 is the only interchangeable lens camera in the world featuring a Hybrid Viewfinder system that incorporates both types of viewfinder.

Key features of the X-Pro2

  1. Newly developed 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor

The unique random color filter array reduces moiré and false colors without the need for an optical low-pass filter. By shooting with a high-quality Fujinon lens, the camera delivers images with a perceived resolution far greater than the actual number of pixels used.

  1. New high-performance X Processor Pro image processing engine

Boasting 4x the processing speed of conventional image processing engines, the X Processor Pro has increased all response times, despite the increased resolution. Write speeds, start-up time and high-speed continuous shooting speeds have all been increased. Combined with the X-Trans CMOS III sensor, the new image processing engine achieves even faster autofocus, lower noise and both tonal and color reproduction that surpasses the previous EXR Processor II.

  1. The world’s first Advanced Hybrid Multi Viewfinder offering the benefits of both optical and electronic viewfinders

The X-Pro2 features optical and electronic viewfinders so users can take advantage of both: optical for a direct view of the subject, electronic to preview settings. The ability to instantly switch between these two types of viewfinders was first installed on the X100 in 2011, but the latest version found on the X-Pro2 is the most advanced Hybrid Viewfinder. It features a Multi-Magnification function that automatically switches viewfinder magnification according to the lens in use and an Electronic Rangefinder that simultaneously displays the electronic viewfinder on top of the optical viewfinder.

  1. New focal plane shutter with a top speed of 1/8000 sec. and flash sync up to 1/250 sec.

A faster mechanical shutter gives extra flexibility for aperture selections in bright conditions or when shooting with flash during the day. In addition, while noise and vibration levels typically increase with faster shutter speeds, the X-Pro2 is quieter and vibrates less compared to conventional models thanks to the optimization of key controls and parts.

  1. Robust, weather resistant body meets the needs of professional photographers.

The camera’s chassis is made from four pieces of magnesium alloy and is sealed in a total of 61 points on each section, making it dust-proof, splash-proof and capable of operating in temperatures as low as -10°C.

Product Features

 (1) Ultimate image quality thanks to the highest resolution sensor to date in an X-series camera and unique color technologies developed over more than 80 years as a film manufacturer

  • The X-Pro2 features the new 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor that uses a unique random color filter array to reduce moiré and false colors without the need for an optical low-pass filter (OLPF). By eliminating the OLPF the resolving power of FUJINON lenses is maximized to deliver images comparable to a larger, higher resolution sensor.
  • Fujifilm’s unique color reproduction technology, developed through over 80 years of producing photographic film, delivers beautiful colors just as you remember them, including warm skin tones, clear blue skies, and the vivid greens of foliage.
  • The X-Pro2 features the new ACROS Film Simulation mode. Harnessing the high processing performance of the X Processor Pro, this mode produces smooth tones, deep blacks and rich textures that are far superior to conventional monochrome modes.
  • A new Grain Effect mode adds graininess to photographs. This mode produces images reminiscent of old film photos, especially when printed
  • Improved noise reduction has been made possible by an improvement in signal processing technology. High ISO sensitivity performance has also been improved to the point that the whole sensitivity range – up to the maximum ISO 12,800 in RAW – can now be used with confidence. Even the higher settings - up to ISO 51,200, there are smoother gradations and deeper blacks, vastly increasing low light shooting options.
  • An improved electric charge transfer rate and algorithm means ultra-fast readout speeds are possible. This has led to a significant improvement in functions including AF speed and continuous shooting performance.

 (2) Ultra-high performance X-Processor Pro boosts processing speeds by 4x that of a conventional processor

  • The powerful X-Processor Pro dramatically improves a wide range of response times. Start-up time is now just 0.4sec., plus the camera also boasts the shortest shooting interval of 0.25sec., a shutter time lag of 0.05 sec. and AF in 0.06 sec.)
  • By using compressed RAW files, performance and functionality now meets the needs of professional photographers, including faster live view and even higher definition movies.

 (3) The world's first Advanced Hybrid Multi Viewfinder, which combines switchable optical and electronic viewfinders

  • The EVF uses an LCD with 2.36 million dots. The display speed has been improved from the 54fps of the previous model to a maximum speed of 85fps, which substantially reduces the image delay phenomenon when tracking a moving subject. Blackout time after release has also been reduced by approximately half, to 150ms, so it’s comparable to an optical viewfinder.
  • The optical viewfinder’s design is based on the proven system from the X-Pro1. It incorporates a diopter correction mechanism and has a longer eye point of 16mm so the finder is easier to see through. In addition, the telephoto bright frame has been enlarged from a focal length of 60mm to 140mm, further enhancing practicality and convenience.
  • The X-Pro2 features an Electronic Rangefinder (ERF) mode that was highly rated on the X100 series. It displays a small electronic viewfinder on top of the optical viewfinder, which can be used to check focus, the angle-of-view, exposure and white balance in real-time, even when taking photos through the OVF.

(4) The number of selectable focusing points has been expanded from 49 on previous models to 77 for greater functionality and faster autofocus

  • Approximately 40% of the imaging area is now covered by fast, precise phase detection AF pixels, which means focusing speeds when photographing moving subjects have improved dramatically. By combining the processing capabilities of the new X Processor Pro with a contrast AF readout speed that’s 2x faster than before, the X-Pro2 delivers the fastest AF performance ever in an X-Series camera.
  • By improving the predictive AF algorithm and increasing the accuracy of the phase detection AF information continuous shooting at up to 8.0fps is possible.

 (5) Rugged and reliable body that is ready for anything professional users can throw at it

  • The body is made from rigid magnesium alloy and has seals in approximately 61 places making it splash and dust resistant. It will also continue to operate in temperatures as low as -10°C so it can be used almost anywhere without having to worry about the conditions.
  • It features the same semi-gloss black finish as the X-Pro1. This finish can only be added after a thorough polishing and adds a luxurious touch that will please câmera enthusiasts.
  • The focal plane shutter now boasts a top speed of 1/8000 sec., flash sync at up to 1/250sec and shutter durability of 150,000 shots, making it both versatile and reliable.
  • A dual SD slot has been added for the first time in an X-series camera. Not only does this reduce the need to replace cards frequently, it also enables multi-shot continuous shooting and reduces the risk of data loss.
  • The rear LCD uses a 3 inch display with 1.62-million dots. This makes it perfect for composing images as well as assessing shots from the X-Trans CMOS III sensor for sharpness, colour accuracy and white balance.

 (6) With key functions located on the right hand side of the camera body, all main controls can be accessed without taking your eye from the viewfinder

  • The shutter speed dial, exposure compensation dial and finder switching lever are all milled from aluminium for a premium look and comfortable feel.
  • Reminiscent of old film cameras, the ISO sensitivity dial is now built-in to the shutter speed dial. This means camera settings can be confirmed at a glance without having to turn the power on.
  • A command dial position (C) has been added to the exposure compensation dial. Selecting this function switches exposure compensation operation to the front command dial and expands the range to ±5EV.
  • Command dials are now featured on both the front and rear of the camera. By adding a push function, they are easier to use, but still retain dust and splash resistance.
  • A total of six function buttons are included, allowing easier access to regularly used functions.
  • The addition of center-weighted metering is ideal for everyday shooting when using the optical viewfinder. As it is a more basic metering method, it’s perfect for photographers who don’t want to rely on high levels of metering automation.
  • A new Focus Lever enables users to quickly select a focusing point, speeding up operation.

 (7) New graphical user interface design

  • New categories have been added to the tabs on the menu screen, allowing faster access to the menu required.
  • A maximum of 16 frequently used items can be registered to the new My Menu feature. When combined with the 16 items from the Q Menu, a total of 32 shortcuts can be created.
  • The finder display offers a greater level of customization so it can further match the individual needs of the photographer.
  • The menu screen font and layout have been changed for a cleaner and more stylish look.
  • A Bright Frame Simulation function has been added to the optical viewfinder mode. Here, the angle of view of each focal length can be confirmed without having to replace the lens, so the user can change lenses more accurately.

(8) Accessories for extra convenience

  • Hand Grip MHG-XPRO2

Improves the grip on the camera and reduces the chances of camera shake, especially when using heavy, large aperture lenses. This grip can be left in place when using a tripod and enables users to change the battery and SD card without having to remove the grip from the body. The Arca Swiss plate can be used as a quick release with compatible tripods.

Leather Case BLC-XPRO2

This genuine-leather bottom case elegantly shows off the X-Pro2’s classic design while protecting the camera body. The battery can be replaced while the case is attached to the camera and the case comes with a cloth to wrap the entire camera body when storing it in a bag.

The Leica Premium: Why pay more for a Leica-branded compact

Posted on by Mike Evans

Whenever I review a Leica compact I hear from critics who maintain that the equivalent Panasonic is just as good and is invariably cheaper. They have a point. If ultimate saving on the initial purchase price is the objective and every penny counts, then it is difficult to make a strong case for buying the Leica. On the other hand, if the whole package including cost of ownership is taken into account there is a much stronger case for choosing the Leica
